I arrived shortly after noon. I put up a couple of home made streamers in the LZ and headed up top. Frank & Deb, Larry & Lesa and Eric P were already there, pretty much done with the taming. A lot of work those guys put in!!! I replaced the streamers at launch. The posts were there, just the streamers were gone. It was blowing in 13 mph, gusts up to 15, very occasionally up to 18. Perfect! It was coming straight in, but by the time we all got set up it started switching all over the place during cycles, straight in between cycles. Brian (PG) arrived and we all waited for a bit. Frank was the first one off. I followed 10 minutes later launching into a light cycle just before it really came in and could do any switching on me (thank you Larry for the advice). Larry B launched about half an hour after me. We all had great flights, over an hour. The air was pretty smooth, only entering thermals was a little textured. Great flying! Frank and Larry opted call it quits so that they could go cool the bodies down in the water. I tried to follow the suit, but couldn't get down!! At one point, not even trying I found myself 750' over launch. I flew away from the ridge over the field by the cemetery at 800' agl, and boated around for another 10 minutes trying to get down. It was hard, not kidding. Had I not had to get down to catch a ride up I could have stayed there for another hour! Epic day for me, that's for sure. Good landing, got home at a decent hour, everybody's happy. My car was showing outside temp of 100F !!!
Thank you Eric and Larry for the launch assistance, and Frank and Deb for the ride up. |

Got an early start and had to spend a few hours at work this morning, assuming there'd be no flying. While at work, Larry B called and talked to Deb about heading to the Ridge to do some taming and hopefully get a flight. I got home and asked Deb what she wanted to do for the day? Like a "good flying wife" she told me about the plans to fly at the Ridge. So, a quick bite to eat and pack the needed items and off to WesMar we go. Pick up the wing and stuff and head to the Hill.
Arrived at about 12:30 and Larry B and Eric P were busy taming the hill (and it needed taming). I joined in with the whacker, blade attached, and we spent some time clearing a good launch and set up area. In the mean time Michal arrived and set out some wind streamers and helped with the whacking. At about 13:30, we began to set up. The cycles were coming regular and the winds were sustained at about 12 and gusting to about 18. Around 14:30 I launched and the ridge lift was there but not strong. I stratched for a bit and hooked one at the north end that took me to about 2200 over. No one was coming out to join me so I headed back over launch and lost about 500 on my way. Michal was on launch and was out to play shortly after. I never did find another solid thermal and we scratched to stay alive. Larry B was patiently awaiting a good launch cycle as they were getting stronger and crossing from the south now. Unfortunatly, Eric left his harness at home and did not fly. Larry, Michal and I enjoyed some soaring good times. Michal had the flight of the day and could not get down. He and Larry landed by the cemetary and I at the H-4 spot. After breaking down, Larry, Lesa, Deb and I went for a much needed dip in the quarry off of Higby road. Man, that was refreshing!! Got to watch an eagle soaring the ridge from our pond vantage, his head glowed in the hot sun. A good day was had by all. Okay, Eric's could have been better but he dealt with it amazingly well!

Taming not done by any means. Larry brought his mower and cleared the top and set up area real good. Eric and I worked on the launch chute and down the hill a bit. A blade was needed but Eric had only a heavy string so he struggled with the thicket. I ripped through the thicket with the blade attachment but we did not even come close to getting it all done. Lots more to go and blades will be needed.

I think the official temp for the day was 93 or 94? It felt like a hundred and with the heat index it probably was. Didn't get a temp at 2200 over but it wasn't much cooler. Even the pond water felt like a bath tub! Let me tell ya, it was HOT!!! The flying made all the sweating worth while though!

2k and still hot. Sounds like a perfect day to fly in ur underware. (I'd say necked but, you know, the whole harness zipper thing could be a disaster.) |
